‘Audrey Hepburn’. Quite a lady and quite a song. Well we think so and we hope you all like it to.
Its not really about Audrey very much though, and I like to think that although I didn’t write the lyrics with her in mind (or did I? I was looking at the portrait of her in my studio at the time I was recording the guide ideas, so maybe I was), something came through in a more subconscious way. I mean it would be pretty opportunistic just to randomly name a track after someone uber-famous just to get hits on the net, or get radio play just through name recognition, now wouldn’t it?
I kinda think this one is our new ‘Therapy’, and I know lots of you won’t agree as they are very different musically, but this song and ‘Therapy’ both share some very common elements. ‘Therapy’ is about frustration and the search for a answer that can be related to. So is ‘Audrey’. ‘Therapy’ deals with being unable to emotionally commit. ’Audrey’ too, though for different reasons. ‘Therapy’ deals with the sense of not belonging where you are, and of not achieving your goal. So does ‘Audrey’. ‘Therapy’ is very catchy. So is ‘Audrey’. etc etc I could go on forever. I really love this song and can't wait to drop it on an unsuspecting public very shortly.
This song is very middle-of-the-road and I think its why I like it so much. Just the other day, one of the guys we have playing drums mentioned that no-one is writing these types of tunes at the moment. He felt that the style was like Bon Jovi’s lighter stuff, and after I got over my initial “Shit… really?” horror, I took it as a compliment. There are a lot of things not happening so much in music any more, and one of those things is writing to an audience that really has an appreciation for a well-rounded, appeal to most people, rock ballad. I mean, Bon Jovi are not my favorite, but no-one can deny that there is a real skill to writing rock music that will appeal to most, so if ‘Audrey’ reminds people of a time where music was fun, then I’m all for it, coz fun is what I’m all about.
