After some well-received live shows, Defryme are now, thankfully, back on track with recording and mixing the new album, XV.
Quinn says: "It has been great to get back out amongst it and reconnect with original fans, interested musicians and new recruits. We are hoping for larger turn-outs in future, so we're back on the singles and album train, which, we're hoping, will generate some interest from local radio. We're planning on a double single promo release to radio, and we're planning to offer a limited number to competition winners on our website. Its exciting times in Def-land."
More details will be posted on competitions in the near future, but for now I am sure I speak for all of when I say, "Bring on the new songs!".
After the very warm response from their recent appearance on Guitar Gods and Masterpieces, Defryme are also planning on doing and acoustic session of selected songs in an Abbey Road-esque set up in the Pony Music studios. The performance and recording (audio and video) is planned for late October and fans will be invited to this exclusive event via defryme.com, and Facebook.
Michael: "Quinn has a lot of friends on Facebook, he's says he knows them all, but I think he doesn't, so I said "Alright then, invite them all and we'll see how many turn up." He seems to think that even the ones on the other side of the world will show hahaha. He's still an idiot, but we love him... you know, he's the slightly simple one in the mix"
Well, whether fans show up or not, it will be a real treat to see some of the old and new songs in this type of set up!
Geoff's father, Ashley, passed away late last week. Ashley passed peacefully, surrounded by those he loved most. The band's thoughts, love and condolences go out to the Mison family at this time.
Ok, so if you're a hard-core Defryme fan you will know that the L.A. Guns tour through Intense Impact has been cancelled, and that the Guns are on their way home soon. It has been a mad weekend with a lot of favours being pulled, and in particular, some great up-stepping by the crew at Back In The Day, providing some impromptu gigs to help get the guys home after pretty much being left stranded here.
I arrived at the Palace Theatre in Melbourne on Friday and was greeted at the door by the P.A. which was being loaded out. Not a good sign. A guy associated with Heartbreak Boulevard was on his mobile, frantically booking another show. Yet another bad sign. The optimist in me said "Nah, it's just some kind of mistake". The realist in me knew, as I actually did earlier in the day, if I admit it to myself, that the deal was off.
I don't know the exact story, and honestly, don't care about the particulars. Gigs were promised to bands and fans and those gigs weren't delivered.
All I can say from my end is that I was told that our band would be helping out a fan, turned promoter, save what he could of a tour that other bands seemed determined to destroy. Being a trusting cat, and all-round good guy (yeah right), I immediately got on to the other lads in my crew and made it happen. The main disappointment is that I have not heard directly from anyone from the team at Intense Impact, instead being put on the phone with a friend of one of the guys who couldn't really provide any enlightenment as to what had gone wrong. No offense meant to that guy, he was actually decent enough to try.
So, I am sorry for the Defryme fans who were made so excited by the possibility of us playing to them within the next two weeks. We are hard at work locking in shows in your town, but where we were going to hit you straight away, may take a little longer and we hope you can be patient. Its difficult for us too as we can't wait to see you all and feed you a mouthful of rock.
QGK on behalf of Defryme Filling in for Creed
PS.
We are currently looking for bands to play with and thought we might post it here. If you are in a band, have a decent following and are interested in getting together with us to create some amazing times, let us know on the Contact Page and let's get started.
We have been offered a spot on the upcoming L.A.Guns tour, 'Sex Action' and we're coming to your town (sorry Adelaide and Perth) on the East Coast within the next 2 weekends!
Here's the deal.
Our first gig went quite well, we think, so we are planning another.
I just got off the phone with Ben from Revolver and we are looking good for May/June (will release exact dates in the next few days, hopefully).
Those of you that came to the Cherry show and had a blast, thank you for your kind words after the show and your posts on FaceAche, verrrry much appreciated :) There were a few photographers at the show, and it would be great if y'all felt the love and sent us in your shots to use on up in here yo!
Send us a message from the Contact Page and we'll get in touch with you from there :)

Loving the energy of our fans for the great support. Thank You Thank You Thank You!
Lots of work going on! Quinn has been busily attempting to replicate Glenn's keyboard parts for the live show, but has "decided to re-invent the wheel on most of them as times have changed and so have we. Most of the tracks from Purekiller still stand up pretty well as they are, but I wanted to look at adding a different flavor to a couple of them as I found it very difficult to replicate the SH101 sounds and playng style that Glenn was doing. Hopefully, they don't sound too crap."
Defryme are all very excited about the upcoming Cherry Bar show and hope you'll all try your best to "get your asses there".
Cheers 'til next time,
Creed
Rehearsals, re-programming of original line-up songs, trying to keep it together while all else erupts into flame and blood, well... these are just a few of the things we've been doing to keep the ball rolling toward the April 2nd gig at the Cherry Bar in Melbourne.
Firstly, the songs are sounding pretty good. Old and new are finding their place within the set and we are happier each time we rehearse them. A couple stand out as a little dated, but we realize that we will be drawn and quartered by our home team if they are left out, so, for now, they stay :)
Having said that, we have energised the ones we feel don't fit into the plan to the extent that they are acceptably pretty decent.
Those of you that have been requesting songs from Stylo, we are working on it but are finding these songs extremely difficult to place, so, for the moment, they will be absent.
The songs we will be playing on the 2nd of April are as follows:
(in no particular order)
# Sup?
* Purekiller
* Mama Said Knock You Out
# Bitterful
# Audrey
* Rivers
* Sanity
# The Blackbird
# Dancin' On A Needle
* Brass Monkey
* God Inside A Man
# Superhuman
# Change Your Mind
# Killfingers
* Therapy
# Anything Good
* Gunn
Hi all.
Yes its been awhile since the last update but this one is sure to please most.
First though, happy new year from the band and we hope that all is good and all are safe and healthy :)
Secondly, Defryme begin rehearsals for their first live shows in 15 years this month, with gigs planned for early april through to early May in Melbourne!
Other states will follow shortly, but the band are eager to warm up with the home team before taking the show on the road.
For those of you that knew the band way back when, there should be some old school satisfaction as the band plan to do half of their favorite stuff from PK and Stylo mixed in with half of their new stuff from XV!
The first gig will be at Cherry Rock, Level 2, 100 Flinders Street, Melbourne with Ash;ey Rothschild's (Caligula) band, Familia and a yet to be announced third act on Saturday 2nd April 2011.
As a very special thank-you to our loyal supporters, we are offering, for a very limited amount of time, our new single as a free download! There is a servicing fee to our digital download provider of US1 cent, which was something we couldn't avoid.
Like the free version of "Sup?" on Facebook!
{ This item is now SOLD OUT }
Please leave a review as a comment if you feel the urge :)
This is something I am yet to really nut out with the other guys, but I think it would be a big thank-you to the die-hard Defryme fans that have patiently waited for our first release off the new album.
I also think it would be a great way for fans to help spread the word about Defryme by way of Facebook and Twitter, as the only pre-requisite to receiving a free download would be to "share" the experience on one or both of these social networking sites.
Ahem... when I say free, I think what I really mean is that a charge would still apply (as we would have to pay the digital transfer company 'something' as its not a free service), it would however be as close to zero as we'd be permitted to go. Also, if we just give it away gratis, it doesn't count as a sale... and that's no good as it technically means we are not moving any units... so...this way the 'sale' still counts and goes toward our being able to show how many units have been 'sold'.
I also like this idea of 'giving it away' as it, hopefully, would deter people from just downloading it on torrents illegally, as it would be pretty low to go that path, due to the 'free' nature of the offer.
I would love to hear any feedback from fans and other interested parties.
The release of "Sup?" will be next Monday morning at 10am and a snippet will be available on this website later this evening.
To those of you who have purchased a Deadman T-shirt to help pay for recording - thank you very much.
To those that haven't... thanks for reading our blogs and keeping up to date with what we're up to. Pervs :)

(For those of you asking about Creed, he's busy at the gym... losing that winter tyre he's been nurturing)
The release of "Sup?" will now be early September as the final EQ will be done on the 6th of September by Damien YOung and Geoff Mison at Pony Music (so if it stinks... its their fault! lol). The band are very excited! Big Ted Excited!
We are also doing a photo shoot with the wonderful, gorgeous, magnificent (yes she's doing it pro bono) Alannah Grdic this week to help further promote your need, as loyal Defryme supporters, to get behind the band and give it a good shunting by way of buying, via donation, a Deadman Limited Edition T-Shirt. All proceeds go to us... um... the recording of the fabled XV album!
Final comps have been completed on "Dancin' on a Needle", "BitterfulTM", "Anything Good" and "Nobody Lyks U" this month so your donations (you know who you are) have gone towards this and we appreciate your continued support of this venture. If it weren't for your incessant nagging... um... sweet sticky love of the band, it wouldn't be happening. So, thank you all very much, the Rymers can't thank you enough.
So, that being said... "What's next?" you may ask.
Well, we need to get some radio support for when we drop "Sup?" on you all and we have some From Lee-Roy at "Living in the land of Oz" which is fantastic! We are, however going to need our old mates at the J's to give us a hearing too, so...
If anyone has a direct line to someone such as, say, Richard Kingsmill or The Doctor, please let us know via the contact form. We know Chris Thompson who has always been a huge Defryme supporter (the first track of ours that he had them play at Triple J was a 12 minute live version of our namesake song) but we are not sure if he is there any longer. Any help in the way of promotion, from any avenue, would be had. Just make a comment on this post if you have anything that could help :)
That's it for this week, thanks for reading :)
~QGK (filling in for the mighty Creed, who is busy in training)
PS. Anyone know anyone with a warehouse or just big open covered space where we could shoot footage for the "Sup?" clip???
Just make a comment on this post if you have anything that could help :)
PPS. Check out our concept store (if you already haven't)
You can find it HERE.
Hi Rymers, more progress on recordings has been made and we now have three songs of the fifteen for the album looking very close; "Sup?" (needs EQ tweak, then done), "Audrey Hepburn" (needs EQ tweak, then done) and Nobody Lykz U (Ready for mix). "Sup?" needs about an hour or so of tweaking and it'll be ready for release. Our plan is to release the song digitally, no hard copy until a later date. This is so that we can get the ball rolling and let our fans in on where we're going with the new album. It is also a very inexpensive method for us to adopt as there are no manufacturing overheads. Thank You all for your patience.
We have received quite a few good responses on our concept store this month, so to those of you that took the time to check it out, thanks a bunch :)
You can find it HERE.
Also, we haven't forgotten about Live At The Wireless '94, its on the back burner but definitely a priority.
Oh, and happy birthday to Quinn, who moves into the position of youngest old fart in the band lol.
First update of the month is the new GALLERY of photos from the band's rehearsal with Geoff Mison from Pony Music a few weeks ago. A great time was had by all and the songs were sounding a treat.
There are also some new concept band photos in the GALLERY, so check those out while you're there too.
The band wanted to have Live At The Wireless '94 up here for you to download as well, but as it is on cassette, and there is no cassette player at Defryme Central, unfortunately, this week is not to be the week for it.
There is a new Defryme concept store that we're trying out and it would be great to get your feedback on it. You can find it HERE.
That's about it for this week, but hopefully Live At The Wireless '94 next week :)
Another ridiculous month of working and recording and rehearsing.
A quick hit with Scaff last weekend quickly proved that there are two very good drummers who can cut the new Defryme stuff no problemo - very pleased about that yeah.
Recording is one thing, but it in't really rock 'n Roll until you get it into a room and smack that shit out. The boys are very happy at the moment and are looking forward to the forthcoming release of the 'Sup?" single.
No date is confirmed as yet, but storyboard for the music video are complete and its all now about getting everyone at the same location on the same day to get into filming (not an easy thing to do).
Quinn goes back to Pony in two weeks, and is hoping to come out of there with the completely finished and ready to listen to version of "Sup?", and also the final mixes of singles 2 and 3. It might be wishful thinking but we are staying positive and focussing on that as a real outcome.
Love you guys for hanging in there, and will have more for you soon.
Quinn has been working with Geoff and Damien at Pony music to fine-tune the first release from "XV".
"Sup?" is home and hosed and now it only needs to be mastered before release.
You will be able to buy the single in digital form and in hard copy, though the digital version will be released first. The b-side for the hard copy "Sup?" will be "Jaded Ways".
Storyboard design for the "Sup?" music video are underway, and will feature a post apocalyptic feel. Rough outlines indicate a story set in the middle of a violent battle, turbulent and vicious. I for one cannot wait to see it completed.
Rehearsals have been underway, with more this week. Band members have been going over the new material with the new drummers and all is going swimmingly. A new track "Nobody Likes You" is a stand out with band members as being a serious contender for release number 2.
This week's update is a small, but substantial one.
Michael located a cassette (a what?) tape of Live At The Wireless from 1992 that is pretty awesome. The band played the show as if it were a gig, so there is plenty of energy and movement in the music. It's a rather large download (about 45mb) so be prepared for a wait. In order to keep the performance intact, Defryme decided not to chop it into individual tracks. Enjoy :)
Hi all, this week's news is straight from Quinn's Blog, and reads...
I have had a few posts on the Facebook page by fans who are less than impressed with the amount of time it is taking for us to "just get back out there". I thought I would take the time to write to you all about this as its probably on a lot more minds than are actually expressing it.
With the departure of Glenn and Grant, the going has been slow. It is more difficult than I first realized to write and produce 15 tracks that are in the Defryme vein, without members of Defryme to jam with. The remaining members have very limited time to spend on the project, so right now, I am essentially the Defryme entity and the main amount of creativity is coming from me. To make this project happen, it has been necessary for someone to own it and spend a year away from working a real job. This of course, has been me. The decision to do it has made things very strained in other aspects of my life, and while making music is my first love, its not my most important one.
I'm loving what I am doing, so don't get me wrong. I appreciate all your kind words and interaction with us on the fan pages and here on the Defryme website. I may have started to promote the reformation of the band a tad early, in hindsight. Some fans, rightly mind you, are impatient, but there is literally nothing I or anyone else can do about it. Studio time is donated (thanks to Pony Music), and very limited. Members have moved on and their creativity with them, so its been back to the drawing board on songs a few times. In effect, I am doing all I can to make our first release as timely as possible. The first single, "Sup?" is so close to being done that it is frustrating. Please believe me when I say that no-one, absolutely no-one on this planet, is more impatient with the speed of progress than myself.
Live gigs seem to be the main topic of frustration for some fans. "Hurry the fuck up, already", one guy wrote. I have to take that on the chin. Of course people want to see us live. We were the predominant live local act of our time, and our fans have long memories. And why wouldn't they? We stunned and amazed them, even the naysayers. Would they want us to go out half-assed and destroy our reputation with a single shit gig? Of course not! So, while gigs are important, very high on the agenda, its crucial that if this reformation (Well.. new version actually, if we're getting technical) is to succeed and become more than a revisitation to our glory days, then it has to be right - and tight.
So the short story is: When its cooked, you can eat it.
Thanks to all who have purchased a Deadman T over the last couple of weeks. You will be pleased to know that you have donated to the recording of the tracks "The Blackbird" and "It Don't Feel Like Earth", specifically, the horn section (Yes! Old-school Defryme with horns - it'll be just like old times! [Listen to "Trust" off Stylo]).
I recently completed two new demos for the album, titled "Superhuman" and "Nobody Likes You", and am awaiting feedback from Mike and Rob as to whether or not they feel the songs are "Rymers" enough. I think they are the two most likely "Legacy Defryme" sounding tracks I've put together so I'm not too stressed :)
I also did an interview with Lee-Roy from Living In The Land Of Oz last week and that should be available to watch on this site very soon.
"Sup?" mixing got detoured a little this week as Quinn decided to re-do the vocals. The time taken was well worth the effort as the vocals are now closer to the classic Defryme edge!
Lee-Roy from Living In The Land Of Oz also came out to Pony Music to interview Quinn about the album, recording and all things Defryme. The interview will feature on Lee-Roy's show shortly, and will also be posted on this site too!
Everyone who has ordered a Deadman (andChick) T-Shirt has also been notified of a little competition we are running called "Airman". Entrants are invited to perform their very best air guitar pose while wearing their new Deadman (or Chick) T, have it photographed and sent through to us.
The funniest, most original entry will win a white on black Deadman XV T-shirt, in their size.
These shirts are currently reserved for band members only, so they are rare and not for sale.
Suggestions on how to win:
1] Glam up.
2] Set the stage. Quite frankly, the winning entry will be an awesome pose in the most unlikely of places amongst the most unlikely of people or things. So don't be shy!
3] Get someone who knows what they are doing to take the photo. Composition is everything.
Rules:
1] You have to be wearing your Deadman XV T. And it does have to be yours (we'll know if its not).
2] No real guitars in the photo. Air guitar is funnier and therefore more coveted.
3] That's it. Go for it!
When you're done, use the contact form to ask us for details on how to get your pic to us and we will pop your entry into the Airman Competition Gallery on the Defryme site!
We haven't decided how long we'll run it for, but we want to give everyone the chance to shine, so let's tentatively say "June" sometime.
"Sup?" mixing is going well and should (fingers crossed) be finished this time next week.
Deadman (andChick) T's have been printed and are now ready to purchase, so choose your size here and click on the ad image to go to the shop!
Here are some pics from the two days out printing at While You Sleep.
Stay tuned for more news about the "Sup?" single mix, and a live interview with Quinn by Lee-Roy from Living In The Land Of Oz, which will feature on the website very soon.
Those of you that have pre-ordered have been notified by email of the link to our online store. You have 24 hours until the location is opened to the public and our Deadman T's sell out!
If your size is unavailable, please pre-order for the next run > link

The Defryme DEADMAN & DEADCHICK limited edition "XV" t-shirts are now available!
These t-shirts are a way for fans of Defryme to help contribute to the recording, mixing, mastering, promotion and release of the Album "XV".
This is a bare-bones, no budget music expedition, and fans are being given the opportunity to show the love by helping make this album a reality. It is true that only with your help will Defryme be able to deliver the best album possible. Contributions from Pony Music have helped get the recordings started, but proceeds from the sale of these t-shirts will ensure a timely release for the first single and subsequently, the long awaited follow up to Purekiller, X (to the) V.
So, to show your support to this worthy cause, why not buy one for yourself and another one for the person you aspire to be!
I'll explain it further so there's no confusion about these wonderful t's.
1]
These t's will be available until the release of Defryme's "XV".
2]
These t's will have the words "DEFRYME XV" on the left sleeve.
3]
All proceeds of sales will contribute to the release of the "XV" album.
4]
These particular t's will never be available again from the date of the Defryme XV album release.
5]
These t's are printed locally in Melbourne at While You Sleep, using the fantastic ASColour "Paper" and "Wafer" t-shirt stock. They are light and very comfy, not the usual scratchy band stock that we're used to.
6]
You will be inundated with attention from your preferred orientation when you wear this shirt. You will also be harder to kill as you will have supreme confidence and, dare I say, elevated levels of "HMMOF, You're sooo cool!"
Buy one today!
Although some sizes are unavailable at the moment, that is due to unavailability from the manufacturer at this time. If your size is unavailable, please send us a direct message by using the Contact Form, and we will do our best to make sure that your size is available in the next shipment of stock - coz we love ya!
Ok, a quick update on the news and events surrounding the lives of the ordinary people in Defryme!
Firstly, Michael and Quinn wrote a new track last week called "Nobody Likes You". The gents feel that this will be their new "Therapy" as it is irrelevant, irreverent and, most importantly, classic 'Rymers style, so frikken look out!
In other news, Grant Miller is back on deck as resident "weird sound" creator. Stepping away from the drums, for Grant, is quote - "a most awesome opportunity". Having heard his work for the new track "Killing Machine", its a great move by the band to have Grant at the helm of the "weird", as he's obviously very suited to it.
Next, Rob and Quinn are working on a deal to get some "Dead Man" T-shirts made up and all proceeds will go toward the final mixing and recording of the new album "XV". These shirts will only be available for a limited time and will have a "Dead Man" logo on the front of the black shirt in red, with the words "Defryme" and "XV" in white and red respectively on the left sleeve. These shirts will still be available for sale after the album release, but the XV will be dropped from the sleeve at this time. Only these first runs of shirts will go toward supporting the album! We will have more on this in the next couple of weeks as we're trying to fast track the availability.
That's it for the moment but Michael and Quinn are working on some more stuff tomorrow, so I'm sure I'll have more to talk about really soon!
Just wanted to have a general gas bag about gigs as there have been some queries.
Ash from Familia asked Quinn on Facebook today, when he thought the band might be ready to start playing gigs. This is Quinna's response:
Considering that we are embroiled in a lawsuit at the moment... only joshing... Um, that's a toughie mate as we currently have two session drummers working on the album with us, and we're not rehearsing as such. Considering the reputation we had back when, we aren't going to rush anything. My vision is to get our product out as soon as is humanly possible, start building awareness of the band across a new audience while incorporating our die-hards as well and then look at the viability of touring. I don't want to just go around with no plan locally. We've done all that before and I'd rather build the interest online and also on radio and the video shows if its possible before getting out and cramming the new album down everyone's gullet. Some of the die-hards will have a bit of trouble with a few tracks I'm sure as we are a new version of Defryme and it shows in the music. I'm really looking forward to getting it out there, but playing small shows is not on my radar. Having said that, we will possibly do warm ups in Melbourne under an assumed name a few times, but other than that, we're not ready yet. I plan on releasing the first single as soon as its mixed, so I would assume depending on its overall acceptance and success, we could be gigging as soon as April, but that's a guess at best.
Although the plans to start gigs are a ways off for the time being, there is great news on the new music side with track "Anything Good?" only requiring Rob's guitar parts before a final mix. That'll be one down, fourteen to go...
All future memberships will require administrative clearance before being activated. Sorry for any inconvenience but there are some real bastards out there. #Note: This has been amended and you will now be able to sign up and start cruising through our site immediately :)
Sorry to all who tuned in for the non-existent streams. Q has no excuse other than his days are running into one another and his timing is completely off game. Quinn will make it up to you. He'll have something special for you all very soon. He promises. He really really does.
Ok, here's what's going down. Firstly, we got an amazing 8 drum tracks recorded in a two day period at Pony music late last month and now we are all very excited about the future of those songs. We have used two drummers on the recordings and mixed up the tracks we gave to each to see what could be achieved. Geoff Mison from Pony Music has provided very nice stuff for "Audrey Hepburn", Kill Fingers", "Change Your Mind" and "Dancin' on a Needle", while session maestro Scaff has put his stank on "The Blackbird", "Sup?", "Anything Good" and "Bitterful".
All that is left for this month is to squeeze the drum parts so they are nice and neat, record some of Rob's guitars and Michael's Bass on the new tracks, and we're looking like being in business.
Defryme have had a very busy two months. The departure of Grant had put the band back, from a timing perspective, to a place where we couldn't give you an indication at all as to when a release could be expected. The band have been working with potential replacements to try and fill the gap, but as anyone will tell you, its not easy replacing a custom part on anything. The Rymers are now, happily, back in the saddle to start recording on the 4th and 5th of next month (Next week!) and I'm pleased to say that the new blend of styles is sounding quite good.
So first thing's first. The drums for 'The Blackbird', 'Sup?', 'Audrey Hepburn', 'KillFingaz' and 'Change Your Mind', will go down first and then be mixed later in November.
Plans to release 'Sup?' as the first single may be put on hold due to a rather annoying timing glitch by Robbie Williams, who has decided to make Jesus references all through his comeback single (Sup? has Jesus references too, so a wait until the Williams single hype dies down is just plain smart yo).
Tentatively, the first single from the new Defryme album will be "The Blackbird" or "Audrey Hepburn".
Things have been very busy in the Defryme camp this last month, and due to that, there has been no updates.
First thing's first. The band would like to bid a fond farewell to their friend and member Grant Miller, who has decided that being in the band under the current circumstances is not as attractive as he first thought. All in the band all wish him well with his solo project "ApeNotes", and look forward to having a laugh with him someday about the ridiculousness of life.
The recording session for "Sup?" have been going slowly but surely. As some of you may know, choosing a first single is pretty hairy stuff. I mean. you only really get one shot. If it bombs, you take a loooong look at the quality of the rest of your material (Defryme are quite lucky in that regard as some of the new stuff Mikey and Quinn are putting together sounds very good), and decide if the musical climate is ripe for it. "Sup?" is one of those songs that if its not 'just right' it misses the point completely, so, the drums have taken a bit of work to get right and they are now in the headspace required. The guitars went down pretty easily, though Quinn and Rob took all day to do their parts due to having too much fun, and the keys that Glenn did offline have fitted into the rest of the scope really well.
The band will be mixing and tracking vocals next week, and plans for a video shoot are underway, so if we're lucky, and if management agree, then we'll be looking forward to a release before x-mas.
All the drum cuts for the first five tracks are done. Some have been fine-tuned, which means they are as good as finished as far as editing goes, and others still need a little tweak, but as far as most of the band is concerned, progress is looking good.
Quinn says, "It's not like the last time we recorded an album (Purekiller 1994). Back in the olden days, we had to cut everything on SSL, and that had serious limitations. Not like today where you can go completely stupid and automate every hit and crash. That's not what I'm doing though. I have gone through the drums and found the best takes and fills and compiled a good take from these. Then I've gone in and moved the kicks and snares that are out of time, but I've done it by hand and not made it exact, so there's still a lot of feel still there. I don't want it sounding like a drum machine. My whole direction on this album is to play to our strengths, which is that we can play our instruments to create our vibe, or our flavor or whatever it is that makes the people who like us like us. I think the major challenge has been not to get too carried away with it, and to remember that while we have rehearsed the tracks a little before recording them, we're not really going to nail them until we start heavy repetitions in rehearsals and gigs. I was talking to Rob earlier tonight and I mentioned that he needed to turn over his guitar parts quickly, that time is of the essence. He was asking if we should play the songs more before recording them and I suggested that rather than do it that way, let's just bang the songs out as they are all pretty decent to start with and its not like we're going to f*ck them up, and we can worry about the fine-tuning of them when we're playing them around the country. He asked me if it would bother me that we'd have a distinctly different sound and arrangement for the songs live as opposed to the recording and wouldn't I rather we got them right beforehand. I replied that we could have the best of both worlds and just do a live album when the songs were gold. Rob cracked up and told me I was a m*therf*cker, that I had an answer for everything. Let's hope I do."
Today's Trivia
While working on the drum edits for the first five of the fifteen new tracks for the album, Quinn worte the basic shapes for three new tracks - Blackbird, Who's F*ckin' Next? and It's Time Now
Quinn also re-assembled a broken track that will now be called "Anything Good", and has reckons its the new flagship song of the album. We'll see about that when the demo is posted eh?

Rob has finished his guitar takes for 'Sup?' and they are now being compiled by Quinn at The Beach House. The guitars are really good on this track and Rob has given them the 'Defryme/Rob' feel and sound that they needed. We're really looking forward to hearing the end product now!
So, now Rob moves on to tracking for 'Audrey' which is timely as it is looking like this will be the debut single for the band with a tentative release date of 'late' September, with 'Sup?' to follow Ocyober-November.
Don't forget that here are plans for the band to shoot a clip in Melbourne in the next 4-odd weeks and anyone wanting to make up part of the crowd in it should contact me here for details as soon as possible to secure their spot (as there is not a need for heaps of people). Contact Creed
I know there hasn't been a lot of news this month, but that is due to the band busily shaping up tracks for the new album. Rob has just about finished his guitar parts on 'Sup?' and will begin his parts fro 'Audrey' next week.
Those of you that have asked for more info about where and when the band will be playing, here's an update: There is discussion amongst the members this week about playing a few low-key shows around Melbourne under the guise of a secret identity that will be made known only to website members... more about that at a later date when they're closer to making it happen.
There are also plans for the band to shoot a clip in Melbourne for the first single, in the next 6-8 weeks and anyone wanting to make up part of the crowd in it should contact me here for details as soon as possible to secure their spot (as there is not a need for heaps of people). Contact Creed
Drum and Bass Tracks for five new tracks are done. Well... at least they're recorded. Now comes the task of making sure everything is perfect before laying down guitars, keys and samples , and finally vocals.
Damien Young at Pony Music turned out to be a great asset, and the drum tones are in Grant's opinion, the best he's recorded. "The drum, room there is massive", says Grant, "The in-house kit I used there was second to none. I'm really glad we worked with Damien, ...the guy has vision, I can see that! It (Pony Music)is a frakken great place to work. I had a frakken ball yesterday! I know we were really productive, but I haven't laughed so much in ages...lol!, I was trying to go to sleep last night, and I kept on bursting into laughter."
Quinn and Michael where also very happy with the outcome. "I reckon its about as close as we've come to getting really good tones at the outset", says Quinn, "These tunes have got the same kind of tones as the session we did at Alberts in Sydney all those years ago (see Music > Sanity B-Sides) which I think were the best recorded examples of the band. We have always had people saying ' You guys sound much better live... like, I do like the recordings, but...'. But if yesterday's work is any indication, I think we are well on our way to having some recorded versions of our tunes that will finally stand up next to the live ones. And this makes me very happy. Plus I got to hang out with my bros, and you don't get much better than that."
Today's Trivia
The band spent the entire time at Pony Music speaking in an extremely bad Russian dialect, amusing themselves by trying to out gross each other with descriptions obscene and depraved. The winning submission has the abbreviation U.T.Y.N.I.F. The first site member to correctly unravel the disgusting meaning of these letters will win... um... something. Bragging rights at least. So add your entry as a comment to this post and you'll be contacted if you have guessed correctly. *Hint: It's pretty disgusting and the band don't really expect anyone to be 'off' enough to guess it!
Quinn's Killfingers Demo As promised, here is the demo of KillFingers, the song inspired by Thomas Richardson's yearning for toy guns after his folks said 'No'. Thomas decided to make his own, as so many of us do, by pointing his index finger while erecting (yes erecting) his thumb. He then proceeded to shout at his dad, "If you won't by me guns, then I'll getchya with my kill fingers!" Play KillFingers Demo ›
A busy week. Conversion of song arrangements are almost complete in preparation for Friday's Drum and Bass recording session. The band are all very excited to be working with Damien Young, who is a gifted, and particular, audio engineer as well as being a lifelong buddy of Quinn.
It is the band's hope that by working with Damien, who is renowned for pulling great organic live tones, that Defryme will finally be able to capture that "BIG Band" sound, that is missing from so many of today's recordings.
Some of the Rymers feel that while technology has made some facets of musicianship easier, it has also allowed musicians and producers to get very lazy and let the machines do a lot of clean up on performance.
"I think that performance is where the difference between bands can be really heard and felt", says Quinn, "Its really obvious in a lot of very young bands - you can actually hear that they have asked to sound just like Linkin Park. So, of course, the producer has simply pulled up those modules and effects in Tools, and just cloned them. It's so sad. Our stuff might not be the most original shit out there either, but you can hear, even in the demos, that we are just trying to write the best songs that we can, and sound like us doing it."
Today's Trivia
Quinn's favorite instrumental at the moment is Bear McCreary's version of All Along The Watchtower. He plans on petitioning the other Rymers to use it as gig intro music!
After the toughest month of the year, we are now ready to begin recording a third of the tracks for our new album. Tracking of drums and bass for five tracks at Pony Music will begin this week, with the lucky songs being:
Audrey Hepburn
Quinn's favorite of the bunch, nice and mental!
Sup?
A favorite of the whole band, sweet Jesus!
Change Your Mind
Rob's favorite track of ours at the moment.
Want Some
Grant's latest addition to the record.
KillFingers
Based on Thomas Richardson's alternative to handguns.
Some of these tracks are not yet available on the website as demos, but I will attach them as soon as I can so you will have something to listen to while we work.
